Buchanan Chevrolet’s Complimentary Powertrain Warranty in Waynesboro, PA: What’s Covered

October 17th, 2026 by
Buchanan Automotive Chevrolet dealership in Waynesboro, PA

Every qualifying pre-owned vehicle sold at Buchanan Automotive Chevrolet includes a complimentary dealer-backed powertrain limited warranty at no additional charge. Under the PowerCare™ limited warranty agreement, coverage protects the major mechanical systems that move your vehicle: the engine, transmission and transfer case, front and rear drive axles, and the seals and gaskets on those parts. When a covered failure is repaired, state and local taxes and the fluids required for the repair are covered too. Here’s how the term works, what’s included and excluded, and how to keep your coverage in good standing.

How Long Does Buchanan’s Powertrain Warranty Last?

The term depends on the age and mileage of the pre-owned vehicle you purchase:

10-Year/100,000-Mile Coverage

For pre-owned vehicles 5 years old or newer with 60,000 miles or less.

12-Month/12,000-Mile Coverage

For pre-owned vehicles older than 5 years, or with more than 60,000 miles (up to 150,000 miles).

Your exact expiration date and expiration mileage are printed in the Vehicle & Limited Warranty Information section of your agreement. Coverage ends at whichever comes first: the expiration date, the expiration mileage, or the agreement’s aggregate coverage limit. Depending on the term option on your agreement, months and miles are counted from one of three starting points: your purchase date at zero miles, your purchase date and odometer reading, or the vehicle’s original in-service date.

How It Works Alongside the Chevrolet Factory Warranty

Buchanan’s powertrain warranty doesn’t replace the factory warranty. It does not pay for any part or repair that the manufacturer’s warranty still covers, so it protects you once factory coverage for that component has run out. For reference, new Chevrolet vehicles come with these factory limited warranties:

Factory Coverage Term
Bumper-to-Bumper 3 years/36,000 miles
Powertrain (retail) 5 years/60,000 miles
Powertrain (Duramax turbo-diesel engines and qualified fleet) 5 years/100,000 miles
Roadside Assistance (retail) 5 years/60,000 miles

Chevrolet’s powertrain limited warranty is transferable to later owners, so a recent-model pre-owned Chevy may still carry factory powertrain coverage when you buy it. Chevrolet Roadside Assistance is available at 1-800-243-8872. All factory terms run until whichever limit comes first. See Chevrolet’s roadside assistance page and GM’s warranty program summary for details.

What Does the Powertrain Warranty Cover?

Coverage applies to the listed parts as installed by the vehicle manufacturer, in the event of a mechanical breakdown or failure caused by a defect in material or workmanship.

System Covered Parts Covered Only If Damaged by a Covered Part’s Failure
Engine All internal lubricated parts; cylinder block; cylinder heads; harmonic balancer; timing chain, timing belt, balance shaft belt, gears, pulleys, guides and tensioners; oil pump; intake and exhaust manifolds; diesel engine vacuum pump; engine mounts; water pump; turbocharger, intercooler, wastegate and wastegate actuator/controller; supercharger, pulley and clutch Cylinder barrels, timing chain cover, valve covers, oil pan, rotor housing

Seals & Gaskets Seals and gaskets on all covered parts —
Taxes & Fluids State and local taxes and fluids required as part of a covered repair —

Parts in the third column are covered only when they’re damaged by the failure of a covered internal part. Factory-installed turbochargers and superchargers are covered.

For hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric vehicles, EV battery failure means measured performance outside the manufacturer’s tolerance. Where no tolerance exists, it means a loss of more than 30% of charge retention capacity. Gradual capacity loss from normal use isn’t a failure, and 12-volt batteries aren’t included.

What Isn’t Covered?

This is a powertrain warranty, so any part not specifically listed above isn’t covered. That includes air conditioning, infotainment and audio, power accessories, suspension, and steering components. Routine wear-and-tear and maintenance items are also excluded, including:

Brake pads, shoes, linings, rotors, and drums

Manual clutch components

Tire and wheel damage, alignment, and wheel balancing

Spark plugs, plug wires, glow plugs, filters, belts, hoses, and wiper blades

Fluids, lubricants, and coolants, unless required as part of a covered repair

Shock absorbers, strut cartridges, exhaust system, and catalytic converter

Coverage also doesn’t apply to:

  • failures caused by collision, fire, flood, freezing, or other external causes
  • damage from lack of coolant or lubricant, sludge, or contamination
  • pre-ignition or detonation
  • defects covered by a manufacturer recall
  • previously flooded or salvage-titled vehicles
  • incidental costs such as loss of use, storage, or towing charges

What Can Limit Your Coverage?

An aftermarket part alone doesn’t void coverage. However, some uses and modifications either need to be noted on your agreement or exclude related failures:

Modifications

Non-factory components aren’t covered. Failures the administrator determines were affected by modifications are excluded. Examples include over- or undersized tires or rims; exhaust, intake, ignition, fuel, suspension, or steering changes; disconnected emission controls; and aftermarket electrical work.

Lift and Leveling Kits

Allowed only when three conditions are met: a licensed repair facility installed the kit (up to 6″), tires are no more than 4″ taller than the tallest factory option, and the “Lift Kit” box is checked on your agreement. The kit itself isn’t covered.

Towing

Towing a trailer over 2,000 lbs. requires a factory-approved towing kit, and the trailer can’t exceed your vehicle’s manufacturer specifications.

Business, Rideshare, and Snow Plow Use

Business use (including rideshare) and snow plowing must be checked on your agreement. Livery, taxi, emergency, and police use aren’t covered.

Racing and Competition

Racing, speed contests, and track events on or off road are excluded.

How Do You Keep Your Coverage in Good Standing?

The core requirement is simple: have your vehicle serviced as recommended by the manufacturer, and keep proof. If requested, you’ll need verifiable receipts showing the date and mileage of each service. Service performed within 1,000 miles and/or 30 days of the manufacturer’s recommended interval is considered compliant.

You don’t have to return to the selling dealership for routine maintenance. Under the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, companies can’t void a warranty just because you used an independent shop. Buchanan’s agreement also allows repairs at any licensed repair facility. What matters is that the work follows the manufacturer’s schedule and is documented.

The agreement also asks you to protect your vehicle once a problem appears:

  • Make sure warning lights and gauges work.
  • Pull over and shut off the engine when one signals trouble.
  • Authorize inspection or teardown promptly.

Further damage from continuing to drive after a failure isn’t covered. Buchanan Automotive Chevrolet’s service team in Waynesboro can keep your maintenance records in one place.

How Does a Powertrain Warranty Claim Work?

Every repair requires prior authorization from the warranty administrator before work begins:

  1. Take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility. Buchanan recommends returning to the selling dealership when possible, and some situations may require it.
  2. Give the repair facility your limited warranty number and authorize the diagnosis or teardown needed to confirm a failure.
  3. The facility calls the administrator at 1-844-296-6788 with your warranty number, current mileage, failure date, and any diagnostic findings. The administrator may inspect the vehicle before issuing an authorization code.
  4. After authorization, you pay any deductible and non-covered costs. Then submit a legible, itemized repair order signed by you, plus any sublet bills and towing receipts, by fax, email, or mail as listed in your agreement.

If a breakdown happens outside the administrator’s business hours, you may take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility for emergency repairs. The facility must contact the administrator the next business day for authorization before reimbursement.

Deductibles and Coverage Limits

  • If your agreement lists a deductible, it applies per covered visit.
  • Once a part has been repaired or replaced under the warranty, the deductible for future repairs to that same part is waived for the rest of the term.
  • Covered repairs are paid at a reasonable cost, up to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the part.
  • Replacements may be new, remanufactured, rebuilt, non-original, or serviceable used parts.
  • Each claim is capped at the vehicle’s J.D. Power Clean Retail Value, and total benefits can’t exceed the vehicle purchase price.
  • Coverage applies to failures within the United States and Canada.

Frequently Asked Questions About Buchanan’s Powertrain Warranty

How long does Buchanan’s powertrain warranty last?

Pre-owned vehicles 5 years old or newer with 60,000 miles or less receive a 10-year/100,000-mile term. Older vehicles, or those with more than 60,000 miles up to 150,000 miles, receive a 12-month/12,000-mile term. Your agreement lists the exact expiration date and mileage.

Can the warranty be transferred if I sell my vehicle?

No. Buchanan’s powertrain limited warranty isn’t transferable. Because it’s provided at no additional charge, it also can’t be cancelled or refunded. Chevrolet’s factory powertrain limited warranty, by contrast, is transferable to later owners.

What documentation do I need to file a claim?

Before repairs begin, your repair facility needs your limited warranty number and prior authorization from the administrator. You’ll submit a signed, itemized repair order and any sublet or towing receipts. You may also be asked for maintenance receipts showing the date and mileage of each service.

Does the warranty include roadside assistance?

No. Buchanan’s powertrain warranty covers repair of covered parts and doesn’t include roadside assistance or towing. Chevrolet Roadside Assistance is included for 5 years/60,000 miles on retail vehicles, and qualified fleet vehicles receive 5 years/100,000 miles.

Are turbochargers and superchargers covered?

Yes. Factory-installed turbochargers, intercoolers, wastegates and wastegate actuators/controllers, and superchargers with their pulley and clutch are covered. Aftermarket forced-induction parts aren’t covered, and related failures caused by modifications are excluded.
